Johnny English works as an amusing, lighthearted comedy that embraces its spy genre while also providing plenty of laughs. I always find myself laughing when I watch Johnny English; it’s consistently funny no matter how many times I see it. Rowan Atkinson portrays his usual clumsy persona and places him in a refined world of spying, which amplifies the humor due to the contrast. Even though he stumbles through events, English maintains his self-assurance as he repeatedly puts himself in harm's way, often requiring assistance from his aide and an alluring associate to escape peril. The subsequent films don’t quite reach the standard set by this initial movie, because they miss the mark on combining silliness with enjoyment. However, the first Johnny English film succeeds in bringing everything together—the action sequences, the humor, and the characters. While he may not be a skilled spy, Johnny English is certainly an entertaining figure.
