Many recall John Wick primarily for its stylized action and high number of kills. However, a closer look reveals what truly sparks the events that unfold: a beagle puppy named Daisy. In the initial moments, Wick’s wife passes away due to illness. Prior to her death, she makes arrangements for a puppy to be delivered to his home the day after the funeral, accompanied by a note explaining he still needs something to cherish so as not to succumb to despair. That dog isn't simply an element of the plot; it represents her last demonstration of affection, a small comfort standing in place of the person she leaves behind. Therefore, when three criminals invade his home, assault him, and kill the puppy to steal his car, the film’s focus isn’t really on the stolen Mustang. It's about a man struggling with grief experiencing the loss of his final connection to his wife. Everything that happens afterward is an expression of that sorrow transforming into motivation. The skill lies in how little conversation is necessary. A few quiet scenes featuring the puppy are enough to understand why a former assassin returns to using weapons. The dog provides significance to the violence, which isn't common for action movies. Those who love dogs may find the initial scenes difficult to endure, but the loss is portrayed with genuine emotional impact rather than sensationalism.
