John Wick exemplifies what audiences expect from an action blockbuster, showcasing impressive set pieces and impactful stunts that are sure to elicit reactions. Though the narrative and acting aren’t particularly strong, the filmmakers do try to build a larger universe for the characters to inhabit. The assassin underworld has some truly imaginative services and background details which is quite remarkable. Frankly, the performances across the board feel underwhelming. I respect Keanu Reeves as a person, but his delivery of lines feels off; it's almost mechanical, even considering he’s meant to be stoic. This doesn’t ruin the film, but a more skilled performance could have made it better. The central conflict felt somewhat contrived and didn’t entirely resonate with me, however, ultimately it serves its purpose in driving the plot forward. What these movies prioritize is the intensity of the fight sequences. John Wick eliminates numerous opponents effortlessly, using a wide range of weapons and strategies to dispatch other assassins. While there are some inventive kills, many simply involve headshots with a pistol. I would have appreciated more diversity in that regard, but the sheer brutality and absurdity of it all still made for an enjoyable experience. Score: 79% Verdict: Great
