This film really appeals to me. It’s direct, full of solid action sequences, and the protagonist remains steadfast in his purpose, avoiding unnecessary social or emotional complexities. Some viewers might question my assertion that there's a lack of emotional content, given the plot revolves around John Wick’s reaction to his wife’s death and the subsequent killing of the dog she gave him. However, what I mean by "no emotional nonsense" is that John Wick never questions his decisions; the movie doesn't attempt to portray him as an average person grappling with doubts about taking out the bad guys, nor does he experience those frustrating moments where a character hesitates and nearly drops their weapon at a crucial time. Certainly, emotions are present—particularly rage and a desire for vengeance, along with a growing sense of fear among his adversaries. The storyline is simple and traditional, as I mentioned earlier. A retired assassin suffers an injustice at the hands of the spoiled son of a powerful crime boss. The assassin retaliates, seeking revenge. People die – many people. There's a final confrontation between the assassin and the main antagonist. That essentially covers the narrative arc. Of course, such a story can be told effectively or ineffectively, and I found the way this movie presents it to be highly entertaining. Keanu Reeves delivers a strong performance as the hit man, and so do the primary villain and most of the other significant actors. Throughout the film, we get glimpses into John Wick’s past life, which is quite interesting. The hidden world he once belonged to, and how that world functions, would be suitable for a classic James Bond adventure. Then there's the action. As it’s an action movie, you expect substantial investment in the action sequences, and this film doesn't disappoint. There's plenty of action, and it’s well-executed. While John Wick’s ease in eliminating his opponents while waving his gun(s) in every direction without much focus can occasionally feel exaggerated, it’s done with a fluidity and grace that is undeniably cool. The gun battles are often combined with equally impressive martial arts combat, creating a seamless blend. One aspect I particularly appreciate about this movie is that John Wick remains a calm, resolute, and unprovoked killing machine from beginning to end. There are no drawn-out moments or obligatory scenes of self-doubt or regret. It’s consistently “the bad guys will pay.” This naturally allows for the inclusion of other elements I enjoy in stories like this—such as watching the arrogant son of the crime boss gradually experience a shift toward genuine fear, fearing death and the consequences of angering the man he so carelessly provoked. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie with my oldest son yesterday.
