I was really looking forward to this film, especially since I loved the initial installment so much. But as the credits began to play, I honestly couldn't help but wonder "What just happened?". Please be aware that what follows might reveal a few things about the plot. One of the things I appreciated most about the first movie—as you can see if you read my review of it—was its straightforward approach: eliminate the bad guys and move on, without any unnecessary emotional baggage. John Wick fully committed to his quest for revenge while simultaneously introducing us to this fascinating world of assassins, secure locations, concealed shops selling weapons, and high-end tailors providing bulletproof attire, etcetera. In this film, he's pressured into a job by someone truly unpleasant. He seems constantly unwilling and wears a perpetually mournful expression. Naturally, that person double-crosses him roughly halfway through the movie, which would have been an ideal moment to get back on track with a satisfying revenge story. Sadly, the screenwriters chose a different path. Ultimately, nobody really comes out on top (though one of the two opponents experiences a more “permanent” setback than the other). Even worse, in my view, their attempts at injecting some dramatic elements have essentially undermined any potential for a John Wick 3 unless they come up with something truly unexpected. There’s plenty of action to be found, but I also felt it was excessive. It seems that nobody—absolutely no one—can shoot accurately except for John Wick. This makes the combat feel more like a parody in the style of Kill Bill than a serious revenge movie. While it's entertaining to watch, its appeal is limited. If this were a Star Trek (TOS) episode, they would have used up Hollywood’s entire stock of red shirts within a single film. And while I’m complaining, I should also mention that the amount of punishment John Wick seems able to endure is… unrealistic. I did find some enjoyment in the movie, but not nearly as much as I had hoped for. It feels like it has a completely different tone than what I recall from the first one, and the ending, at least to me, isn’t satisfying. Despite all that, the action sequences are just as cool, wild, and violent as they are improbable. I was disappointed that they damaged his nice car, though. It's an enjoyable film overall, but it doesn't measure up to the first one, and I can’t give it more than 3 out of 5 stars.
