My father introduced me to what he called "Pulp Trash Novels," and I still display them prominently at home, right next to my more serious books—they even get the best shelf space. Because of that background, I went into this film with apprehension, and those worries were completely justified. I’m willing to accept changes from the original stories; I didn't anticipate a direct adaptation. However, I had hoped for some connection to the source material beyond just the character names. Essentially, I wanted a John Carter movie that captured more than just the title. To be honest, it didn’t even feel like an adaptation of those kinds of adventure stories, and that was important to me—I was okay with creative freedom as long as it still felt like a classic pulp adventure. Sadly, it missed the mark on that front. And to compound matters, it was dull. If you enjoy the books, if you appreciate straightforward adventure and escapism, then I’d advise against seeing this film; steer clear of it entirely.
