Johnson on September 24, 1964, marking the conclusion of the official Government inquiry. _JFK_ centers around New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) and his separate exploration into what happened, which leads to the trial of businessman Clay Shaw (Robert De Niro) on January 29, 1969, for alleged involvement in Kennedy’s assassination. This remains the sole trial concerning the death of President Kennedy. As far as political dramas go, _JFK_ is really geared toward those who are deeply invested. The movie runs nearly three hours, and the initial two hours focus on explaining the circumstances surrounding Kennedy's death and establishing a possible alternative explanation. It’s crucial to understand that this is essentially a propaganda film, and regardless of your beliefs about what occurred, it presents a different perspective than the official Government account. For someone unfamiliar with the events of November 22, 1963—as I was—this lengthy introduction proves both very useful and quite draining; staying engaged can be challenging, so having some background knowledge—even just understanding the Government’s version of events—is helpful. Still, the final portion of the film is captivating to watch, with Costner delivering a memorable speech that seems to have influenced later courtroom movies like *A Few Good Men* and *Amistad*, as it portrays one person facing off against the power of the Government. Although _JFK_ received several Oscar nominations—including Best Picture and De Niro for Best Supporting Actor—and won awards for Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing, it’s hard to believe Costner was passed over; he essentially carries the weight of the final act. It's a very serious film, but also incredibly absorbing. You will likely find yourself questioning what you’ve just seen.
