“Jesus Revolution” (2023) tells the story of Greg Laurie and the Jesus Movement that took place in Southern California from 1968 to 1971. The movie depicts a pastor in Costa Mesa, portrayed by Kelsey Grammer, who is worried about both the counterculture’s focus on drugs and casual relationships and his church's struggle to connect with younger people. His daughter, played by Ally Ioannides, introduces him to a hippie devoted to Jesus, brought to life by Jonathan Roumie, and he recognizes the young man’s sincerity and abilities. Their collaboration leads to a movement that grows over several years. The film should appeal to anyone interested in that time period and the social changes happening then; it's comparable to "Forrest Gump," but with a more obvious spiritual theme. Viewers will recognize figures like Janis Joplin, Timothy Leary, and hear familiar songs such as “Free Ride,” “Listen to the Music” and “War.” I wasn’t previously aware that Greg Laurie began his ministry within the Jesus Movement, nor was I familiar with Chuck Smith or Lonnie Frisbee, who experienced a spiritual downfall and passed away from AIDS at age 43 in 1993. Kelsey Grammer and Joel Courtney both do well as Chuck Smith and Greg Laurie, respectively. Anna Grace Barlow is also quite charming as Cathe, Laurie’s possible romantic interest. Although it isn't as uplifting as "War Room" (2015), I would say that “Jesus Revolution” is better than "Do You Believe?" (2015), “God’s Not Dead” (2014), "God's Not Dead 2" (2016) and "Overcomer" (2019); it’s at least as good as those films. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and was filmed in Fairhope, Alabama, which is southeast of Mobile, with additional scenes shot on location along the coast of Los Angeles. GRADE: B+/A-
