Jerry, portrayed by Tom Cruise, is a highly successful sports agent known for his unbelievable sales pitches—he’s the kind of person who could likely convince someone to buy sand in the desert. He then makes the questionable choice of sharing some of his methods with the public, which results in him losing his job. However, before he's completely out, he manages to save one client, an American football player named Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding Jnr.. Tidwell isn’t particularly bright, but he’s a good and surprisingly devoted husband to Marcee (Regina King), and has the potential for a $10 million contract—if he can demonstrate that special something that attracts big money. While all of this is happening, Jerry also meets Dorothy (Renée Zellweger) and they get married; but it soon becomes clear that their relationship isn’t providing him with enough excitement. He misses his old routine, needing a partner to push him and help him close deals. This offers one of Cruise's more believable performances, as he initially gives a convincing portrayal of someone willing to promise anything for profit. As the story progresses, though, his part becomes somewhat lost in a rather cheesy narrative, which is mostly redeemed by Gooding’s energetic and unrestrained performance—he really embraces the character with enthusiasm. Zellweger has occasional bright spots, but her role largely follows a standard trajectory that doesn't significantly enhance what is ultimately a story about loyalty and realizing the importance of genuine values. It also includes a bit of payback against his former employer! The script is quite sharp and moves quickly, satirizing the excesses of an industry that spends too much money on those who are average, relies heavily on promotion, and generally lacks people with integrity.
