The Rocky Mountains are the marrow of the World. Jeremiah Johnson, directed by Sydney Pollack, draws its story from Raymond Thorp and Robert Bunker's Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver-Eating Johnson and Vardis Fisher’s Mountain Man. John Millius and Edward Anhalt wrote the screenplay, with cinematography by Duke Callaghan. The film features Robert Redford, Will Geer, Stefan Gierasch, Delle Bolton, and Josh Albee. Disillusioned following the war with Mexico and dissatisfied with conventional existence, American Jeremiah Johnson (Redford) abandons civilization to live as a mountain man. He plans to provide for himself through trapping, but discovers that nature can be unforgiving, and he is not the only one inhabiting this wilderness. Other people are present, and Jeremiah will encounter numerous obstacles if he hopes to truly endure. Filmed entirely on location in Utah’s expansive and beautiful natural setting, Jeremiah Johnson isn't heavy on plot, which ultimately proves a strength. The movie largely depicts Redford’s mountain man learning how to survive in the mountains and demonstrating that he deserves to be there. Several problems will emerge to challenge him, offering hardships and adventures that shape his evolution from an ordinary person into a legendary figure connected to the land. Redford seems completely comfortable playing the lead role, and it doesn't take long for viewers to become invested in his experiences. Ultimately, however, it’s the scenery that sticks with you; not only is it stunning, but it also serves as a vital element, setting the stage for Johnson’s solitude and fight for survival. 8/10
