Peligro! John Sturges directed Jeopardy, with Mel Dinelli adapting Maurice Zimm's radio play "A Question of Time" for the screenplay. The film features Barbara Stanwyck, Barry Sullivan, Ralph Meeker and Lee Aaker, accompanied by a score from Dimitri Tiomkin and cinematography by Victor Milner. Clocking in at just under 70 minutes, Jeopardy demonstrates how to build suspense effectively with a limited number of performers and settings. It starts with upbeat music depicting a family embarking on a vacation—a picture-perfect slice of Americana—but it doesn’t take long for misfortune to strike the family and plunge the story into thriller territory. The writing is straightforward and confident, and the actors deliver strong performances as their characters, especially Ralph Meeker who portrays the villain with a slick charm. Despite being filmed outdoors, the production creates an atmosphere that feels confining and tense, drawing the viewer in with a sense of misfortune, peril, and unexpected twists, placing it within a noir sensibility. A significant development in the story is handled skillfully; its implications are so powerful that they don’t even require explicit visual representation. However, certain elements prevent it from achieving a higher rating. Some contrived situations and unlikely coincidences detract from the film's other merits—for example, one scene shows the son (Aaker) stranded on an old pier, and his father shouts "stay right where you are," which seems rather obvious. The use of some noticeably artificial rear projection diminishes some otherwise appealing production elements (the California locations are beautiful), while the conclusion weakens a previous moral point. Despite these shortcomings, it remains a film well worth watching. 7.5/10
