Could this be among the very best movies with a gay storyline geared toward family viewing? It’s a really enjoyable movie for families, although perhaps not ideal for those with more traditional values. The film centers on a lesbian theme, but it isn't presented as a romance. It's a lovely drama that incorporates some genuinely funny moments. Rather than depicting two women developing a romantic relationship and dealing with the usual issues, the story focuses on the family of one of them as they grapple with learning their daughter is gay. The daughter wants to marry her partner and build a life together, so what unfolds within the family—who experiences loss, who finds something positive, and ultimately what happens—is the core of the narrative. The title suggests "Jenny's Wedding," but the wedding itself is only a small element; most of the film explores Jenny’s family. I appreciated how the movie concentrated on each family member individually as it showed them adjusting to the situation. The viewpoint largely comes from the women involved, which makes sense because the writer is a woman and clearly understood how to portray their experiences. Consequently, the father's role felt somewhat underdeveloped; he was the only male character who needed to be particularly strong. The storytelling is superb, and it’s a completely unexpected film. It’s certainly one of the most overlooked movies of the year. The acting is fantastic across the board. Alexis Bledel's part was regrettably brief, but she wasn’t crucial to the plot, and everyone else delivered exceptional performances. The dialogue is well-written, and it occasionally evokes strong emotions. I haven't found another movie with a similar theme that resonates as much for families. I wholeheartedly suggest watching this film. 8/10
