The idea of premenstrual syndrome being a fabrication created by male-dominated media to discredit women is something I’ve considered. Jennifer’s Body comes from director Karyn Kusama and Diablo Cody's screenplay, featuring Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, J.K. Simmons, Andy Sedaris, and Adam Brody. Stephen Barton and Theodore Shapiro composed the music, with cinematography by M. David Mullen. The story centers on a high school cheerleader portrayed by Fox who becomes possessed by a demon and begins consuming her male classmates. Seyfried plays the less popular best friend attempting to intervene. It’s disappointing how few women contribute significantly to horror as directors or writers, and this collaboration between Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama hasn't really made an impression on that front. It seemed from the beginning they wanted to combine contemporary pop culture humor with demonic horror themes, all while exploring the dangers of teenage sexual experiences; however, what resulted is rather bland. The movie doesn’t manage to be genuinely funny, gory, or frightening, and the special effects are subpar. There's a sense that it's trying to do too much at once, feeling muddled and overly controlled by studio interference. The high school setting feels uninspired, Kusama struggles with creating suspense, and Cody’s writing fails to connect on an emotional level. While the actors deliver acceptable performances, occasional jokes elicit some laughter, and there are moments of sensuality, along with a soundtrack that's undeniably energetic, ultimately it’s just too chaotic and restrained to be truly effective. I'd give it 5 out of 10.
