Jennifer 8 comes from writer and director Bruce Robinson and features Andy Garcia, Uma Thurman, John Malkovich, Lance Henriksen, Kathy Baker, and Graham Beckel. The score is by Christopher Young, with cinematography by Conrad Hall. The story centers on Eureka and John Berlin (Garcia), the new officer at the police station. When a dismembered hand turns up at the local dump, Berlin suspects a serial killer is operating in the area—one who targets young women who can’t see. Jennifer 8 had significant issues from the start; it failed to find an audience in America and bypassed theaters entirely in the UK, going straight to video. Behind-the-scenes difficulties were so severe that Bruce Robinson abandoned Hollywood and didn't direct another film for nearly two decades. Despite this history, it’s not as terrible as initial reviews suggested when it had a very restricted release. It is a disappointing movie because it hints at something better than what it delivers. Conrad Hall’s excellent photography creates a strong sense of atmosphere, using limited lighting to give everything a dark feel. Conversations often happen in unsettling locations and are delivered either quietly or with a nervous intensity; the script itself has some cleverness, combining elements of psychological thrillers with well-developed characters brought to life by dedicated actors. However, these positives aren’t enough to overcome its problems: an excessive length, a hasty conclusion, and jarring shifts in tone that disrupt the intended atmosphere. The abrupt ending is especially disappointing; after keeping viewers engaged for two hours, one would reasonably expect a substantial and dramatic resolution, but that doesn't happen. People who enjoy neo-noir visuals might find something to appreciate here, as well as those who like serial killer movies from the late 80s and early 90s before Seven set a new standard. It earns a rating of 6/10.
