David Wickes offered a distinctive take on the familiar story, featuring Michael Caine. Filming occurred during the late summer of 1989, and what works well about this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 narrative is its willingness to invent new elements. These include details concerning Jekyll's deceased wife, a very angry father-in-law portrayed by Joss Ackland, and a charming sister-in-law who feels compassion for the doctor despite being married to someone who isn’t around much (Cheryl Ladd). Ladd was 38 years old when cameras began rolling and looks exceptionally lovely. Another woman of note is Kim Thomson, playing a young prostitute with red hair. Miriam Karlin also provides amusement as an extremely energetic madam. It's worth mentioning that Samantha Womack appears in her first film role, in a small part as a young maid. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 35 minutes and was filmed on Merton Street in Oxford, which is situated 60 miles northwest of London; other scenes were completed in the city itself, including studio work.
