I was really hoping Sir Ian McKellen would appear to praise Patrick Stewart's amusingly over-the-top performance in what is ultimately a fairly forgettable narrative. The story centers on “Jeffrey” (Steven Weber), a typical actor who also works as a waiter, happily enjoying life in New York until AIDS transforms him into someone obsessed with sexual abstinence. Forget intimacy; his career becomes the priority—which understandably causes him distress. Matters aren’t improved by his showy friend "Sterling" (Stewart), who has a much younger boyfriend named “Darius” (Bryan Batt) who is HIV positive and constantly urging him to have more sex. Then he meets “Steve” (Michael T. Weiss), and they connect, but there's a catch: “Steve” also tests positive, placing "Jeffrey" in an awkward position. One good thing is that the drama illustrates how many gay men constructed a psychological—and sometimes even physical—shield when the AIDS crisis emerged. They were scared of the repercussions of their past behavior or resolved to avoid any potential dangers—however those risks might be understood or applied to their lives and habits. Weber does an acceptable job, and occasionally it’s quite moving, but unfortunately there's too much reliance on clichés, and the script frequently resorts to a type of gay humor that Armistead Maupin might have produced when he wasn't at his best. It boils down to whether you embrace life or live in fear, but any sense of reasonable balance seems absent here, so it follows a fairly predictable course. There are some decent parts, but ultimately it’s just average.
