Wuchak on Jeepers Creepers 2

6/10 · Apr 28, 2019

The Creeper makes an appearance on the last day of its hunting period, targeting a school bus carrying a basketball team. A group of athletes and some cheerleaders were traveling back from a game roughly thirty miles south of Bakersfield, California, when their bus was deliberately damaged in a rural area by some sort of winged being. “Jeepers Creepers 2,” released in 2003, stands out as the strongest entry in the series due to its imaginative and unsettling monster design—the Creeper—which evokes comparisons to the main gargoyle from “Gargoyles” (1972), but with a more demonic and malevolent nature. Essentially, it’s a horror film largely contained within one location: the isolated, sun-drenched fields of Southern California and the school bus itself. The initial movie in the series (2001) suffered because of its small cast, and this installment attempts to compensate by including numerous students along with three adults—two coaches and the driver. However, it doesn’t quite succeed regarding female characters, and there's an excessive emphasis on shirtless male athletes, something that can likely be attributed to the writer/director’s preferences. There isn’t much substance here; it’s a film centered around a wicked winged creature attacking a bus full of young people, and not much else. Still, for what it is, it's executed quite effectively. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes and was filmed in Southern California locations like Tejon Ranch and Long Beach. GRADE: B-
