It’s hard to imagine what prompted Michael Caine's appearance in this dreadful follow-up; it seems like he simply needed another swimming pool. The story begins with "Deputy Sean Brady" (Mitchell Anderson) tasked with removing an obstruction from the water before the fishing boats can return. Predictably, he runs into a relative of his deceased father’s intimidating acquaintance and quickly becomes shark food. This prompts the arrival of Lance Guest as the older brother, “Michael,” who is also targeted by the shark's sonar. Despite Caine's best efforts, the entire production is simply absurd from beginning to end, further diminished by Lorraine Gary’s excessive acting. There isn't a single moment of suspense to be found. Even the iconic score has been altered so completely that any sense of dread has vanished as if erased by the (mostly artificial) shark itself. The creature also seems to think it’s in a "Tarzan" movie, given its exaggerated roaring—or perhaps it’s frustrated because too much Brady is lodged between its teeth? To give credit where it's due, there are some beautiful underwater shots and I appreciated seeing a shark consume an airplane – even one constructed from what appeared to be wafer biscuits. However, despite being less terrible than "Jaws 3" (1983), this marks a disappointing conclusion to a series that shouldn’t have existed in the first place.
