It wasn’t until after seeing it that I understood how important Robert Shaw had been for the initial movie's impact. This sequel certainly isn’t the absolute worst thing I’ve ever witnessed, however, lacking his memorable and captivating portrayal of "Quint" leaves us with a rather ordinary experience overall. The shark now targets a group of young sailors – including what amounts to the Brady kids - "Michael" (Mark Gruner) and "Sean" (Marc Gilpin). This puts the sheriff, who is also their father (Roy Scheider), in the position of having to overcome his dislike of being on the water to attempt a rescue. Director Jeannot Szwarc attempted some changes, but the conclusion felt too predictable; and the children’s over-the-top screaming—particularly "Jackie" (Donna Wilkes), who was truly grating—began to annoy me considerably. The cinematography is decent, and there were attempts to conceal the more formulaic aspects of the shark attacks, though the fire-related disaster scenes repeated themselves a bit too frequently. John Williams’ music still manages to create some feeling of danger, but I'm sorry to say that this wasn’t frightening at all and proved quite underwhelming.
