“Jawbreaker” (1999) shares a resemblance with “Heathers” and possesses some enjoyable moments, though it doesn’t quite manage to be truly captivating. The story centers on three high school friends—played by Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, and Julie Benz—who attempt to conceal an accidental death following a prank involving a classmate (Charlotte Ayanna). Their scheme requires them to include a quiet, less popular student into their group because she is aware of what happened (Judy Greer). Pam Grier portrays a detective investigating the situation, while The Donnas contribute a few songs for the prom scene. This black comedy high school film recalls “Heathers” (1988), incorporates aspects of “Carrie” (1976), and arguably influenced "Mean Girls" (2004). While it has its own distinct qualities and could be considered comparable to “Heathers” and the widely regarded “Mean Girls,” it doesn’t reach the level of quality found in “Carrie” or its strong follow-up, “The Rage: Carrie 2,” which was released concurrently. McGowan delivers a standout performance as the attractive antagonist, but Gayheart seems older than her character's age at 27 during filming and appears excessively thin. Two years after "Jawbreaker" appeared in theaters, Rebecca was involved in a fatal car accident in Los Angeles that resulted in the death of a Hispanic youth, significantly impacting her career trajectory. It’s an acceptable film with a good soundtrack, making it worthwhile for those who appreciate the cast members; however, don't anticipate the same level of excellence as seen in teen movies like "Clueless" (1995) and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982). The movie is visually appealing and has its bright spots, but ultimately the narrative isn’t particularly engaging, and I experienced a sense of boredom while watching.
