Wuchak on Jason and the Argonauts

6/10 · May 20, 2023

Jason, portrayed by Todd Armstrong, is set to reclaim his birthright as the ruler of Thessaly, Greece, and he assembles a group of sailors for a journey to locate the legendary Golden Fleece. This quest leads them into encounters with a massive bronze statue, harpies, the multi-headed Hydra, and an army of skeletal warriors armed with swords. “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963) is a film combining swordplay, sandals, and Greek mythology, showcasing Ray Harryhausen’s stop motion animation techniques which were advanced for their era. The movie shares similarities with "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad," released five years prior, and provides a comparable level of entertainment. The beautiful Mediterranean settings, the ship's design, the costumes, and the fantastical action are all highlights. While the battle against the skeleton warriors lasts only around three minutes, it required four months of work from Harryhausen. However, the plot isn’t as engaging as films like “Ulysses” (1954) and “Mysterious Island” (1961), or later movies such as “Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger” (1977) and “Conan the Barbarian” (1982). Those other productions include a more noticeable role for female characters to balance out the male actors in minimal clothing; this film lacks that. Nancy Kovack does appear, but she isn’t introduced until over an hour into the movie, and her character isn't developed sufficiently. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 44 minutes and was filmed along the coasts of southern Italy (Salerno), with additional studio work completed in Rome and Shepperton Studios, located west of London.
