It’s another strong addition to the director’s work, following ‘Warrior.’ The script is solid, although some viewers found fault with it because of its generally positive resolution—a “happily ever after” kind of story. That doesn’t necessarily mean it relies on tired tropes; perhaps they anticipated something darker and more brutal, like many mainstream westerns. I enjoyed it, despite those criticisms, and it's not exclusively geared toward a male audience, even though it carries an R rating. I get that some felt the final ten to fifteen minutes were deliberate, and if so, they served their purpose—the story concluded satisfyingly. The performances are commendable, especially from Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton. It doesn’t offer actors a chance to deliver career-defining portrayals, but everyone fulfilled their roles well. Ewan McGregor felt miscast in his part; it was suitable for someone else. I believe the antagonist needed more menace. This created an unbalanced narrative, so while you might not grasp how events unfold, you'll have a sense of where things are going from early on. The film leans heavily into romantic elements, despite not being primarily about romance. There are unexpected developments and plot shifts along the way.
