This remains my preferred Brontë narrative, and it’s easily one of the finest period drama adaptations imaginable. Joan Fontaine delivers a remarkable performance as the central character, portraying a young woman compelled to enter a harsh orphanage after her father passes away. Following years of mistreatment under the cruel "Brocklehurst," played by Henry Daniell, she secures a position as a governess for the daughter of the solitary Edward Rochester, portrayed by Orson Welles, at his isolated and imposing Thornfield Hall. Their relationship begins somewhat tensely, but gradually softens; however, is anything truly what it appears to be...? Robert Stevenson has crafted a beautifully atmospheric depiction of Victorian England, enhanced by Charlotte Brontë’s keen attention not only to the story's specifics, but also to a delicate and insightful commentary on societal norms during an era when people—even those considered refined—often lacked worth or respect. The film allows ample time for character development and showcases stunning locations; the lighting, shadows, and another memorable score by Bernard Hermann all contribute to the strength of the two lead actors’ performances, resulting in a compelling version of a rich and well-developed novel. I consistently believe that colour detracts from stories like this—black and white is always superior, and it's particularly evident here.
