Typically, I find anime and American comics don’t mesh well; I prefer to enjoy them separately. However, this didn't strike me as typical anime either. It just didn't quite succeed. While I appreciated the artistry involved, the unusual character designs felt out of place alongside traditional American superheroes. The artwork for the settings was lovely, but the overall impression was that it appeared too rough and unfinished for a comic book intended for an American audience. I’m happy to defend the use of distortion in art—I maintain that Jae Lee was among the finest Batman artists ever, and one of the best artists generally—but this didn't resemble his style; it simply seemed unattractive and carelessly executed within the context of an American comic. American comics need a certain vibrancy, a sense of energy, and Gotham Knight was missing that spark.
