A volatile young man named “Vince” (Elvis Presley) becomes embroiled in a bar fight with serious consequences, leading to his incarceration. While in prison, he’s fortunate enough to meet "Hunk" (Mickey Shaughnessy), a crafty inmate who also enjoys playing guitar and singing. The instrument proves to be the key to Vince's rising popularity, and upon his release, he connects with “Peggy” (Judy Tyler), a friendly and influential woman who secures him a recording deal promising riches and recognition. However, he quickly discovers that fame isn’t as wonderful as it seems, and it might not be enough to make up for the connections he's sacrificing. Elvis appears unenthusiastic in his role, as does Tyler, whose performance feels stiff, and the plot is essentially a straightforward progression designed to showcase the star, combining an underdeveloped romantic subplot with the title song, plus other compositions by Lieber and Stoller—"Treat Me Nice" and "You’re So Square." The film touches on the disloyalty and superficiality of the music industry but doesn't offer much beyond that; it feels like a lengthy wait before the songs inject some overly theatrical energy into the proceedings.
