A construction worker named Presley finds himself serving time for manslaughter and uses the opportunity to improve his guitar playing with help from a former country performer, Mickey Shaughnessy. Following his release, he encounters a promoter (Judy Tyler) and overcomes various obstacles before achieving success. “Jailhouse Rock,” made in 1957, marked Elvis’s third film out of a total of 31, though it was only his second leading role. The storyline shares similarities with “Loving You,” which came out the same year, aside from the plot element involving an ex-convict. Even with unremarkable black and white cinematography, this one is better because of the memorable title song sequence and the more engaging final portion. I’d consider it to be among Elvis's stronger early films, alongside titles like “Wild in the Country” (1961), "Blue Hawaii" (1961), "Kid Galahad" (1962) and “Roustabout” (1964). It does a good job of showing what drew so many fans to him during the 50s and early 60s. While Judy Tyler and a few other actresses are pleasant, they aren’t quite as impressive as some of the other women who appeared alongside Presley in his films, such as Anne Helm in "Follow That Dream" (1962), Ann-Margret in "Viva Las Vegas" (1964) and Michele Carey in "Live a Little, Love a Little" (1968). I might mention the ‘banana dancer’ from “King Creole” (1958), but her role was very small. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 36 minutes and was filmed in Century City & Hollywood, Los Angeles.
