The film is a reimagining of Jacob’s Ladder, but with a different ethnic background for the main character. This change unfortunately prevents him from being as engaging, and instead he feels like a collection of traits designed to reflect a particular political perspective on people of color. I find myself longing for a time when Black actors were given opportunities to portray characters with more individuality and depth; I’d love to see someone like Denzel Washington in a role similar to his performance in Training Day again. The reliance on these stereotypical traits ultimately made the central figure less interesting, diminishing my investment in his journey. Furthermore, it lacked the hallucinatory quality of the original film; it didn't capture that same sense of an acid trip. It’s essentially a lesser imitation, seemingly intended for approval by those on Twitter who are unlikely to even see it.
