This film presents an uncommon look at a historical figure. I’ve watched many movies concerning JFK, whether they were factual accounts or purely imaginative stories, but this one centers entirely on his wife. The story unfolds in the weeks following his assassination and then flashes back to that day and what came after, detailing how Jackie Kennedy coped with such an awful period. From the initial tragedy through arranging the memorial services, she faced difficult choices during those four days. She recounts these events to a journalist sometime later. It’s worth noting this film was initially intended as an HBO miniseries before being reworked into a feature film—a gamble by the filmmakers that ultimately proved successful. I wasn't familiar with Jackie Kennedy, so when I first saw Portman’s performance, I felt she seemed to be exaggerating the accent and mannerisms. However, as the narrative progressed, I adjusted my perspective, believing that was likely an accurate portrayal. She delivered a truly remarkable performance and certainly deserved her Academy Award nomination. I questioned where the story came from, but later discovered it was based on interviews conducted by the same reporter who appears in the film. This marked the Chilean director's entry into Hollywood, and he did a commendable job. It’s also one of John Hurt’s last roles, though his part is relatively small. The movie is worth seeing because it offers something different and sheds light on previously unknown aspects surrounding JFK’s death and its aftermath. _7/10_
