It's an exciting story of adventure and heroism centering on a noble knight fighting against unfair treatment by Normans while trying to locate and bring King Richard I back to England. Robert Taylor is at the forefront of what amounts to a cast full of well-known actors, alongside Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine, and George Sanders, all giving understated yet dependable portrayals. Sir Felix Aylmer also makes an impression as "Isaac," the Jewish financier who tries to assist “Sir Ivanhoe” in gathering the large amount needed to free the King, and Finlay Currie is appropriately over-the-top as "Sir Cedric." The script occasionally feels stiff, but the action sequences—and there are numerous ones—are enjoyable.
