It’s a brisk, entertaining comedy thriller with Claudette Colbert performing exceptionally well as a somewhat ethereal poet unexpectedly embroiled in James Stewart’s murder investigation. He portrays a private investigator whose affluent friend has been accused of a crime. When Stewart ("Johnson") receives an offer of $100,000 to uncover the truth, he begins his inquiry, is subsequently arrested, manages to flee into a river, and ends up clinging to "Edwina Corday" (Colbert), who owns the car he commandeers. Despite a rocky beginning to their partnership, they quickly find themselves working together to unravel the puzzle. The story progresses at a good clip; the leads—along with Guy Kibbee as "Cap Streeter"—have excellent chemistry and Colbert delivers some sharp dialogue while the cast handles the absurd situations effectively as they get closer to identifying the culprit. Ultimately, the identity of the killer becomes almost irrelevant – it’s simply an amusing showcase for the two performers who clearly relish their roles, and that enjoyment is infectious.
