Italianamerican presents itself as a 1974 documentary—a brief work, running under an hour—in which Martin Scorsese sits down with his mom and dad. Catherine, who appeared as Tommy DeVito’s mother in Goodfellas, and Charles, who had a role as Henry Hill's cellmate in that same film, are featured, creating a snapshot of what it was like to be Italian-American at the time. The filmmakers' parents share stories about their lives as Sicilian immigrants living in New York City, discussing their family and recollections of life back in Sicily following World War II. It’s primarily composed of interviews with still images and occasional video clips woven throughout. Catherine proves to be quite engaging, while Charles seems a bit reserved when speaking on camera. As an added bonus, Catherine demonstrates how to prepare meatballs, and for those wanting the specifics, a full recipe can be found after the credits roll. Anyone who appreciates Scorsese’s films should definitely check this one out; it's accessible via Youtube.
