"It Was Just an Accident" stands as a demonstration of Jafar Panahi’s determination, representing a filmmaker unwilling to be quieted. The film functions as a courageous statement presented in the form of a psychological thriller. While it occasionally falters due to its desire to be explicitly political—at times the point feels hammered home—it ultimately moves beyond its story and poses challenging ethical dilemmas that are hard to disregard. It’s a gripping and bold encouragement to face the uncomfortable reality that, within a restrictive government, the distinction between fairness and what happens by chance is frequently determined randomly.
