It seems inevitable that after seeing Mandarin and Spanish in films with dual audio tracks, another language would appear – and here’s Hindi, used to some degree. Beyond that, however, this is just an ordinary story about a young woman, "Sam" (Megan Suri), struggling to reconcile her heritage with contemporary American viewpoints. This inner conflict, along with a broken jar of preserves, seems to be enabling a peculiar and intensely negative creature to emerge and flourish on the tension—and it’s responsible for abducting her close friend "Tam" (Mohana Krishnan), who originally owned the jar! Will "Sam" and her American boyfriend "Russ" (Gage Marsh) manage to figure out what's going on? Just as certainly as we will all be leaving the movie theater—and that’s essentially the core issue. There isn't anything fresh or frightening; the visual effects, such as shadowy streets and unsteady lights, are familiar territory. While the Indian cultural elements are appreciated, they don't contribute enough to this adequately acted coming-of-age narrative, which I found rather dull. It feels like something you’d see on television for Halloween—I wouldn’t spend money to watch it in a theater, honestly.
