Claudette Colbert delivers a wonderful performance as "Ellie," an heiress who decides to leave her father's yacht and ends up on a bus headed toward New York, essentially without any money. Sharing that last seat is the charmingly dishonest "Warne" (Clark Gable), a reporter looking for a story. Her father, employing his considerable media influence, puts her picture in all the newspapers, which naturally catches Warne’s attention; he quickly realizes her situation could be quite valuable to his editor. Neither of them anticipates that their initial lack of warmth toward each other will slowly change into something else – it's fairly obvious where things are headed. The plot itself is somewhat familiar, but that isn’t really a problem here. It’s a swiftly moving comedy-drama that uses the confined setting of the bus and motels to highlight the fantastic chemistry between the two leads—a connection that feels playful rather than overtly romantic or sentimental—as they attempt to stay ahead of those sent by her father to bring her back home, as well as away from "King Wesley" (Jameson Thomas), her arranged fiancé, who is currently causing trouble within the family because her father dislikes him. The situations keep shifting and changing as each character tries to outsmart the other—Walter Connolly gives a very entertaining performance as the father figure who also understands that there are many ways to achieve what you want. This might be my favorite role for Gable; he had such a delightful smile and sparkle when playing comedic parts, and Colbert is equally excellent in this thoroughly enjoyable and lively portrayal of human nature and stubbornness.
