It Comes at Night offers a believable depiction of life after a catastrophic event, centering on a family struggling to reconcile their need for survival with their sense of right and wrong. I was struck by how thoroughly convincing nearly everything about the narrative felt; from the arrangement of the home to the way the two families interact. Throughout the movie, both groups are constantly wary, attempting to preserve the fragile calm that has developed for them. Despite knowing each other for a while, complete trust remains impossible in such dire circumstances, generating considerable anxiety as viewers anticipate the inevitable disruption of their tenuous accord. The film’s visuals and sound are exceptionally well-done. The interior shots evoke an oppressive, disorienting feeling, particularly during nighttime sequences. The audio design contributes to genuinely frightening scenes with indistinct noises like thumps and shuffling sounds reverberating through the house. The acting is uniformly strong. The characters' raw, practical, and emotional behaviors fit perfectly within the bleak reality of their existence. Kelvin Harrison Jr. was notably impressive; his character’s compassionate nature combined with a sense of impending doom made for a layered role that I believe he portrayed effectively. Joel Edgerton also delivered another fine performance. Ultimately, It Comes at Night is an excellent film and a realistic portrayal of what a true apocalypse might entail, something I appreciated even considering the lack of action sequences.
