It seems like you can only demonstrate your enthusiasm for something; it’s up to others to recognize your ability. Drawing inspiration from boxing traditions in northern Chennai, this film portrays how Indians embraced and excelled at the sport, with a particular focus on women's boxing. It’s likely to be an encouraging experience for anyone pursuing athletic goals. I was taken aback by the frequent use of strong language, though; while expected in Bollywood productions, it felt jarring given Kollywood’s usual sensibilities. The story doesn't really center around Madhavan; he functions more as a coach, similar to Shah Rukh Khan’s role in 'Chak de India.' Instead, it follows a young woman named Madhi, who comes from a disadvantaged fishing family. The film explores how she transforms her circumstances after a boxing coach discovers her passion and skill. The rest of the story details her progression from poverty to competing for a championship. The narrative has echoes of 'My Fair Lady,' where a girl from the streets ascends into high society – only here, that ascent is through boxing. It incorporates elements of romance, music, humor, rivalries, and corruption, making it generally enjoyable. The direction is good, but I have reservations about the screenplay; while the central theme is strong, it feels too narrowly focused for a broader audience. Consequently, international viewers might struggle to grasp the cultural nuances, and subtitles could diminish the film's authenticity. The musical score was pleasing, although the songs themselves were underwhelming, despite having acceptable visuals. The performances are excellent, particularly Ritika Singh’s and Madhavan’s. While the story is presented from his viewpoint, Ritika truly shines with her acting and boxing skills. It's undoubtedly a film that Indians should see, and it ranks among the best sports movies recently made. However, for viewers outside of India, it’s simply an adequate movie. 7/10
