Iron Monkey proves to be a really enjoyable martial arts film taking place in historical China. The action sequences were designed by Yuen Wo Ping, known for his work on several excellent movies and later, the fight scenes in The Matrix. His distinctive style is evident throughout the combat. For a Kung Fu movie, Iron Monkey presents a story that’s engaging even with some familiar elements. There are numerous instances of criminals receiving what they deserve, and a few humorous moments sprinkled in as well. The plot revolves around the "Iron Monkey," who functions similarly to Robin Hood by taking from those with wealth and distributing it to those less fortunate—he also has an identity concealed like Batman. It rises above the typical “your skill is inferior to mine” dynamic often found in these films, and the central characters are genuinely appealing and well-performed. I believe the English voice cast delivers a commendable effort. The antagonists are exaggeratedly evil, and the heroes consistently emerge victorious—a standard characteristic of this type of film. If you appreciate Kung Fu movies, this is certainly one to check out. Its compelling narrative also makes it relatively easy for people who aren't typically drawn to martial arts films to enjoy.
