I’m typically fond of these kinds of historical adventures, and Jason Flemyng usually delivers acceptable work – but this one is an exception; it's quite bad. The film depends too much on computer-generated imagery, and Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger give performances that are surprisingly over the top, which is more distracting than enjoyable. What possible reason could they have for being in something so awful? You might even ask the same about Charles Dance and Rutger Hauer, although their involvement isn’t quite as glaring. The plot, which doesn't really matter anyway, follows Flemyng’s character, “Jonathan Green,” a cartographer tasked with mapping Russia’s Far East. After some weakly written and excessively choreographed sequences, he finds himself in China confronting the almost ridiculously harmless "Dragon Master" (Chan), while the former Czar of Russia (sporting the titular mask) breaks free from imprisonment in London, leading to a large-scale fight... It does attempt something, I suppose. It blends mysticism with science; it even tries to be funny occasionally, but the final result falls short. The film drags on for nearly two hours, featuring mostly unremarkable dialogue and a kind of patchwork style that feels like it was put together by someone in school. This movie isn't worth mentioning; a truly disheartening project from actors who probably should have known better and writers who might have served us all better had they simply not written it at all.
