I must admit, I felt let down by this third Iron Man film. Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark is certainly amusing—he’s often funny, though not consistently—and there's no denying the impressive visual effects and explosions. However, the plot itself is simply awful. The idea that Killian would employ the Mandarin to commit acts of terror as a distraction from his experimental failures seems completely absurd. The Mandarin comes across as ridiculous, another instance where writers seem to grab names from existing sources without regard for how they damage established characters or previously built-out settings. Whoever penned this script should really feel bad about it. What’s even more troubling is the film's overall negativity toward Iron Man. From the beginning, Stark is portrayed as fixated on his suits, with constant insistence that he should stop being Iron Man. Much of the movie involves Stark moving around without his suit, and when he does wear it, the suit malfunctions or gets blasted off him almost instantly. It feels like most of Stark’s impressive gear is routinely destroyed. The finale features a lot of pyrotechnics, but once again, it's mostly about showcasing how easily Iron Man suits can be demolished, along with more of this anti-Iron Man sentiment. I won’t deny that I was entertained by the spectacle and special effects, but overall, I am disappointed in this movie.
