DoryDarko on Iron Man 3

5/10 · Feb 21, 2017

It’s difficult to say exactly why Jon Favreau didn't direct Iron Man 3; the reasons are usually vague and carefully worded in Hollywood circles. Whatever the cause, something clearly shifted with this installment. Iron Man 3 feels noticeably different from the earlier films. The tone is much darker, which isn't just about a reduction in humor—something most people appreciate about the Iron Man series. The new characters aren’t well-developed, and overall, it simply lacks interest. I struggled to grasp the storyline; I honestly can’t say what its purpose was. Perhaps the biggest issue is that the villains are underwhelming; they're strange and lack charisma. A contributing factor might be that there wasn't one central antagonist but several. Guy Pearce and Sir Ben Kingsley have significant roles, and it was Kingsley who let me down most. His part felt small and uninspired—I’d explain why, but I don’t want to spoil anything. Some audience members even laughed at a plot twist involving his character, but I found it foolish and weak, a real waste of such an accomplished actor. Pearce isn't terrible, but he never manages to make his villain compelling, largely because his character is underdeveloped. The same goes for Rebecca Hall, and the numerous other henchmen. Robert Downey Jr. remains dependable in carrying the film, but even he can’t compensate for how bland his character feels here. Where’s the humor? Where's the cynicism we expect? This isn't the confident, arrogant Tony Stark that audiences enjoy. Suddenly, and without a clear reason, he’s insecure and experiencing anxiety attacks! Furthermore, his superhero persona is largely absent for much of the movie while he’s in Tennessee searching for himself or something similar. I wonder if any of the previous writers returned, given how different it all feels. Pepper Potts also has very little meaningful screen time, and when she appears, she's humorless and irritating. The more I consider this film, the harder it is to find anything positive to say. At least the visual effects are good, and the sound design is impressive. This was my first experience seeing a movie in 3D, something I’d avoided because I suspected it would be distracting. My concern proved valid; it made it difficult to concentrate on what was happening, which may have impacted my ability to follow the plot. Despite this, I'm disappointed with Iron Man 3, especially considering how much I enjoyed the first two. It feels like a missed opportunity—a case of filmmakers trying hard but falling short. There’s no story, no interesting characters, and nothing else worthwhile. It’s too bad.
