This film presents a deeply unsettling experience as we witness the ordeal of two cousins, Seydou (Seydou Sarr) and Moussa (Moustapha Fall), embarking on an intense journey. While they continue their schooling in Dakar, they harbor a secret desire to reach Europe. They diligently work when they can, attempting to conceal their plans from their mother until it's time to begin. The initial leg of their escape from their home country proves relatively straightforward—they take a bus—but the real difficulties start once they fully commit to their travels. It’s then that they, and we as viewers, are confronted with ruthless human traffickers who attempt to transport them across the Sahara to Libya, where even more terrible conditions await. The film starkly illustrates the depths of human greed, depicting scenes of people being beaten, tortured, imprisoned, and sold. At one point, the boys become separated, and our attention shifts to Seydou’s determination as he strives to get his friend medical care—even if that involves piloting a boat filled with other migrants across the Mediterranean Sea to Sicily. The two actors deliver outstanding performances; their on-screen connection effectively conveys their resilience, perseverance, and unwavering loyalty to one another amidst truly horrific circumstances. Moments of humor do emerge, and the actors’ expressive faces are utilized well during these instances. I found myself completely drawn into their story, feeling equally invested in their potential success and repulsed by the blatant disregard for the dignity of those who were so desperately vulnerable. Those familiar with "Flee" (2021) will likely have a sense of what to expect, except this time there’s some breathtakingly beautiful cinematography showcasing our planet at its most desolate, harsh, and unforgiving. I doubt it will receive widespread distribution in cinemas, but if you happen to get the opportunity to see it, it's definitely worth your time.
