The film *Invictus* has some unevenness, but it does fulfill the basic expectations of a sports movie. I’m fond of both Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon as actors, yet I felt somewhat let down by their performances after watching this 2009 picture. While Freeman playing Nelson Mandela sounds good on paper, the South African accent he uses obscures some of what makes his acting so compelling – particularly his voice. He delivers a decent performance, but I don’t anticipate that I will recall this version of Mandela, unlike Idris Elba's portrayal in 2013's *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom*. The way the political and rugby storylines are combined works effectively, although the political aspects are considerably more engaging than the sports portion—and that’s coming from someone who appreciates athletics but not politics. It’s a film I would suggest seeing, though it didn't leave me with anything particularly memorable.
