Two children, living in both Spain and England, find themselves plagued by frightening encounters with a demon intent on taking over their bodies. The connection between these events seems to lie in the fact that each child is working on a story. *Intruders*, a film made jointly in Spanish and English, exemplifies the kind of movie that has promising concepts initially, but ultimately struggles to bring them to life effectively. It felt predictable to discover that horror enthusiasts online have expressed considerable dissatisfaction with it. The film doesn’t generate much fear, drags significantly during its central portion, offers an underwhelming resolution, and barely qualifies as a "horror" film at all. It's important to adjust expectations regarding thrills and suspense within the traditional horror genre, because this is more accurately described as a family drama incorporating fantastical horror elements. This doesn’t help those of us who were drawn in by the plot description and promotional materials, but if you can look past the demon that appears intermittently and suggests something greater? There's an earnest and worthwhile adult film present beneath the surface. Clive Owen portrays the father dealing with considerable difficulties, and like his role in *Trust*, he demonstrates a capacity to deliver emotionally resonant performances when given suitable material. He’s supported by a noteworthy performance from young Ella Purnell as his daughter, and the technical aspects are strong – particularly Roque Baños' exceptional musical score – offering several enjoyable elements. However, despite its thoughtfulness and the filmmakers’ impressive backgrounds, this film isn’t likely to improve its standing anytime soon. 6.5/10
