My experience with this thriller was likely diminished by the fact that Dustin Hoffman consistently reminded me of Jack Klugman! The captivating narrative centers on "Samantha" (Valentina Bellè), who has reappeared after fifteen years spent held captive within a place she portrays as deeply unpleasant. To receive nourishment or rest, she was compelled to solve challenges presented through a disturbing variation on the Rubik's Cube, and now she’s recounting these experiences with "Dr. Green" (Hoffman). Simultaneously, private investigator "Genko" (Toni Servillo), much to the frustration of law enforcement, is also attempting to uncover the truth behind her ordeal and suspects that she isn't the only one who has suffered this kind of trauma. As events unfold, questions arise regarding the veracity of her account—it feels so improbable that it’s difficult to discern what is real and what isn't. Unfortunately, Donato Carrisi struggles with directing this dark mystery, reminiscent of Benicio del Toro’s work. Clocking in at over two hours, the movie frequently loses its way. The story unfolds too slowly to maintain engagement; while there are moments where tension builds effectively, the ending feels hurried and poorly executed, introducing several new characters very late in the process. The performances generally lack energy, and although I felt Servillo made an effort to convey a sense of unsettling threat, much of the film simply didn’t resonate.
