With humanity confronting an extinction event, farmer Cooper and his family struggle to protect their dwindling corn harvest from a harsh environment. Strange occurrences begin after a dust storm reveals magnetic anomalies leading to a hidden NASA facility, where scientists like Brand persuade the former pilot, Coop, to embark on a space mission. Believing the recently discovered wormhole might be an intentional aid for humanity, he agrees and sets off in search of a new home, much to the dismay of his daughter. Accompanied by Brand’s daughter, their dangerous journey starts. This represents a particularly strong science fiction offering from Christopher Nolan. While it incorporates some of his characteristic manipulations of time, largely it's an engaging action film filled with perilous situations at every turn. There’s a good rapport between Hathaway and McConaughey that allows the characters to develop in a way that draws you into their quest. The special effects are outstanding; TARS—a robot with somewhat awkward design—proves surprisingly agile during rescues, and the conclusion evokes an Escher drawing. The story raises intriguing questions and presents difficult decisions, particularly when Matt Damon as Mann enters the picture and challenges their understanding of what “humanity” truly means. A collection of well-known actors provides excellent support; John Lithgow is impactful as the family’s elder, while Casey Affleck and Wes Bentley help to lessen the tension surrounding the central relationship as a looming threat gradually emerges. Clocking in at nearly three hours, it does experience a slow patch roughly an hour in, but this is a Nolan film that avoids unnecessary complexity and stands out as one of the best science fiction thrillers I’ve encountered in quite some time.
