It’s refreshing to see Richard Gere in a part that deviates from his typical romantic lead roles. Here, he embodies "Dennis Peck," who appears respectable on the surface but is deeply flawed beneath. The story follows what happens when Andy Garcia arrives to look into issues within their police precinct; he rapidly determines that Gere's colleague – “Van Stretch,” played by William Baldwin – has a history of domestic abuse, leading to conflict between him and Gere. The script doesn’t shy away from difficult topics—it presents domestic violence, brutality, and corruption within the police force, not limited to one individual but extending throughout the organization. I wasn't particularly impressed with Gere's performance; he’s never been a favorite of mine, and his attempt at portraying a villain through occasional threatening looks and some infrequent profanity didn’t do enough to shake his image as a gentle, agreeable figure. Andy Garcia doesn’t seem capable of much beyond an excessive amount of hair gel, and the production's overall polish ultimately diminished any sense of rawness or unpleasantness in their actions. I tuned in simply because it was on television and the weather is frigid, but time hasn't been kind to this film, and I probably won’t revisit it.
