It’s possible that James Franco was simply anticipating a cultural shift with this project. He raises an important observation near the film's conclusion regarding American cinema's reluctance to depict explicit gay sexual activity. While violence, whether involving heterosexual or lesbian couples, is readily shown on screen, depictions of male-on-male penetration remain uncommon, often obscured by shadows or blankets. Perhaps that was Franco’s central aim here, but the rest of this rather uninspired documentary assembles a group of mostly straight actors—dressed in revealing leather outfits—and places them in dimly lit settings for a sequence of seemingly arbitrary sexual encounters. Some of these scenes are fleetingly explicit, while another is noticeably uncomfortable to witness. Those hoping for the excised forty minutes from "Cruising" (1980) will be sorely let down. The majority of the film consists of interviews with lesser-known performers who seem perplexed by their task: simply disrobing and awkwardly interacting with each other. It's a performance, gentlemen—it’s not Shakespeare! While Franco deserves credit for posing some pertinent questions, much of this feels akin to general pornography; participation is considerably more enjoyable than observation.
