The movie provides amusement but doesn't inspire awe, and it might disappoint those who loved the original cartoon. Inspector Gadget was a fantastic show that aired for a short time on television in Portugal. I recall watching him, and I enjoyed it, though not for very long—maybe four or five years at most. Still, it was one of my favorite cartoons growing up. However, this live-action adaptation doesn't quite capture what made the cartoon special... although that isn’t to say it’s terrible. The film simply is what it is: a form of entertainment with noticeable flaws. It seems intended for kids and teens, but I question whether adults, especially fans of the cartoon, will find much to like. It's not a poorly made movie; there are moments of humor that work well, though most attempts at comedy fall flat. The dialogue is also weak, and the script itself feels rushed and unpolished. In fact, the writing is so flawed that I’m hesitant to discuss it further for fear of giving too much away—let's just say it deals with the origins of Inspector Gadget and his nemesis, Claw. One of the film's strengths lies in its cast. Despite a simplistic plot and subpar material, the actors all seem to have given their best efforts and maintained a professional demeanor. Some performers stood out more than others, though. Rupert Everett, for instance, uses his natural charm effectively and manages to capture your attention whenever he’s on screen with some well-timed sarcastic jokes. Matthew Broderick isn't bad, but seems to struggle with the demands of his role. Joely Fisher is pleasant to look at but has very little to do. Mike Hagerty and Michelle Trachtenberg are mostly relegated to background appearances. Disney put a considerable amount of money into the film, which is evident in the number and quality of the visual effects and CGI. Gadget’s appearance closely resembles the cartoon character, featuring his signature outfit and iconic gadgets, along with the usual mishaps and malfunctions that define him. The sets and locations are well-chosen, and the soundtrack includes a fresh rendition of the original theme song.
