I suspect the low ratings are because some viewers felt it didn’t stick closely enough to the original TV show, although since I haven’t seen that myself, I can’t comment on that aspect. As a movie, however, I did find it enjoyable. *Inspector Gadget* is very goofy but seems aware of how silly it is, similar to *Looney Tunes: Back in Action* and *The Cat in the Hat*. I liked those movies, and while this one isn't quite as good as they are, I still got some enjoyment out of it. It’s unlikely I’ll watch it again, but I can imagine that kids will probably like it. The performances aren't particularly memorable, though Matthew Broderick and the rest of the cast do a perfectly adequate job. There are also some fun little appearances by other actors sprinkled throughout. There are a few genuinely funny parts, but what they really nail is the overall absurdity—it’s intentionally silly, and they embrace that wholeheartedly. Like those earlier films I mentioned, you're bound to irritate some people with that approach, so I understand why it gets criticism – though I don’t think a 44% rating is justified, everyone’s entitled to their opinion, naturally.
