*Insidious: Out of the Further* may not be breaking new ground for the series, but it manages to provide some genuine scares worthy of its existence. Jacob Chase's direction is most effective when showcasing bizarre and striking imagery—notably, an extremely unsettling scene set in a dentist’s office and a strangely disorienting couch fort. Amelia Eve offers a believable and solid performance as the main character, and Lin Shaye’s reappearance as Elise Rainier brings back that familiar feeling of comforting spectral memories associated with the series. The film does depend somewhat on obvious, startling moments meant to elicit a reaction. It doesn't quite live up to the earlier films directed by James Wan, but thanks to capable performances from the leads and several memorable scenes, it’s an enjoyable and creepy experience that earns a **7/10**.
